Monday April 28: Brady Campbell O’Nan

We flew to Austin Wednesday, April 30, rented a car, drove to Round Rock, then Ron drove Chris and us to see Tia and Brady at the Austin hospital.

Wednesday: Grandma, Chris & Brady

They have a dandy hospital, with an atrium like a Hyatt Regency.

Thursday Ron brought Tia and Brady home from the hospital.

Friday Ron drove us to see Chris play T-ball:

Usually, the kids hit the baseball off a tee at home plate, but it’s the end of the season and as a transition to next year, the first two or three tries were coach-pitch: the batter’s coach pitches the ball. There are players at the pitcher’s and catcher’s positions, but they only field- the pitching and catching are done by coaches.

Since the pitches are intended to be hit, there are no “ball” calls by the umpire, and no walks. It takes five strikes to strike-out; I only saw it once. There were lots of foul-ball strikes: the kid would hit the tee but not the ball, which didn’t get out of the batter’s box.

A game takes an hour or so: after an hour of play, they end the current inning and the game’s over.

The setup really favors hitters. The fielding is a comedy of errors. A half inning lasts for three outs or when five runs have scored. In the first game, the score was 15-14 after three innings.

The tee is in the foreground. It fits over home plate, and the height is adjustable.

The team is the Diamondbacks (“D-backs”), like the Denver team.

Saturday morning Mischel and I took Chris to the park:

Saturday: Chris and Grandpa

After lunch, another T-ball game:

Saturday: T-ball inning change

For both games, the final score was 16-14 after four innings.

I’m not sure the kids knew or cared.

On the way back, we stopped to see Pat and Mardean and their new trailer, which I guess technically is a fifth-wheeler:

It has the expandable side panels that make it pretty roomy inside:

Later that afternoon Chris and I explored the creek by their house. This is where the trail petered out:

Sunday was kind of quiet.

Pat and Mardean came over for dinner. Pat brought ribs.

Sunday or Monday it rained, and the last T-ball game of the season was cancelled. The D-backs were good, but didn’t make the playoffs.

Monday we brought a McDonald’s lunch to Chris at school:

Monday: Ping: “Where’s dinner?”

Then we headed back to the Austin airport for our flight to San Jose.

Postscript…
